Often lost in the ongoing conversation surrounding Devin Townsend — amongst his guitar playing, his songwriting, his career arc, his stage presence and, of course, the essence of the man himself — is Devy’s vocal ability. The man is a PHENOMENAL vocalist who can hang with the best of ’em (let’s not forget he got his start as the frontman for Steve Vai’s band).
But what would a professional vocal coach think? I’ve been impressed by many a metal vocalist only to have friends of mine with formal training tell me that their technique is whack.
Vocal coach and YouTuber Beth Roars, at the suggestion of a number of her followers, took a look at Devin’s performance of “Kingdom” for EMG TV some years back and came off extremely impressed by his range, varied techniques, and the ease of his delivery. I’ve never bothered to look so closely at his vocal delivery, but it’s super neat to see it explained in such detail and broken down in this fashion, especially coming from someone who is for the most part unfamiliar with metal. Her reactions to Devin’s trademark showmanship are also priceless.
